Stefanita Herrera was apparently one of the earliest contemporary potters to produce jars with birds and animals attached. Her granddaughter, Ada Suina, made them later on, as did other potters at Cochiti. In this jar, Herrera attached two birds and two lizards to the wall of the vessel. Typical Cochiti pottery decorations of clouds adorn the areas between the birds and lizards.

The jar is in marvelous condition. There are a couple areas of spalling and a few areas of surface abrasion, but none of significance.

Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.
