Marcella Kahe (1916-2008)

Kahe was a respected elder woman of the Butterfly Clan. She lived atop First Mesa in the village of Sichomovi. She was as traditionalist in pottery creation as in her lifestyle. The decorations on this bowl are traditional stylized Sikyatki bird elements. Kahe was a master potter and inspiration to many younger potters.

Arizona presented the “Arizona Indian Living Treasure“ award to Marcella Kahe in 1993. That, alone, should alert one to just how important an artist she was. Further, when one examines this bowl, there is then no question about her talents.

The bowl has a flat bottom from which the walls flare out gracefully before rolling inward to a completed rim. Stylized Sikyatki-like birds decorated the exterior rim and a magnificent large stylized bird fills the interior of the bowl.

Condition: There are two minor scratches that are in the background slip and do not cross into the design. Otherwise, the bowl is in excellent condition.
