Any watercolorist will say that working in the watercolor medium is not an easy process. The watery solution of the paint is harder to control than would be oil or acrylic paints. Calvin Toddy has definitely mastered the technique admirably. His ability to paint in watercolor medium in business card size paintings and achieve the detail that he does is approaching unbelievable.
Toddy is a son of Beatien Yazz (Jimmy Toddy). He lives on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle, Arizona. He is a silversmith as well as a painter and works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, silver and gemstone. He has been a constant award winner at the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial since 1985. He was selected as the poster artist for that organization for the year 1995. His paintings are not at all in the style of his famous father, but in the European style in appearance.
The detail in this painting is phenomenal. The Apache girl’s beaded medallion necklace, her hair and the trim on her clothing are presented in unbelievable detail. The face of the young girl is beautifully rendered.
Condition: This painting is in original excellent condition.
Provenance: This painting is among a collection from the Balcomb family, formerly owners of an art gallery which they closed in 1976.
