Reed was known for modernist landscape and architectural renderings. He was recognized internationally as a landscape artist and printmaker. He mastered the technique of aquatint etchings and is remembered as an important member of the Taos art community after 1960. Before moving to Taos he chaired the art department at Oklahoma State University.
Reed’s paintings and drawings are primarily executed in earth tones and geometric style and feature architectural forms of the New Mexico landscape. The sharp edges of landscape features in this drawing are typical of his modernist style of art. The brown and rust colors impart a feeling of warmth to his works.
Although the location is not noted, this certainly is an adobe building in ruins. It was executed in 1960, shortly after Reed moved from Oklahoma to Taos, New Mexico, and is probably a ruin in that area of the state.
The artist signed and dated it in lower right Doel Reed , N.A. 1960. The image is beautifully framed in a copper toned wood frame that is very complimentary to the painting. It is in original excellent condition.
