This is an exceptionally fine Acoma Pueblo Four-color Polychrome olla, dating from the end of the historic period, late 1930s.  It was traditionally formed from native clay with ground pottery shard temper, coated with a rag-wiped white slip, painted orange/red neck interior, and orange/red underbody with concave base, typical of Acoma pottery of that period. The design was painted in four colorsorange/red, dark red, and black on a cream slip, thus the four-color designation.

The body of the jar is globular and a concave long and graceful neck rises to the rim.  The neck was decorated in orange triangles with black outlining, black diamonds with white slits, and elongated black triangles with white slits. The rim is black.  Double framing lines outline the separate panels of decoration.  The body design is a complicated mix of fine lines, blocks of orange elements and red bars with black outlining.

The jar sits straight and has a commanding presence.  The comprehensive design is captivating in its mixture of elements, and is well balanced and quite visual.  It is an exceptional small olla.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman from Colorado
