Sara Fina Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

This vessel shape is more associated with Margaret Tafoya than with her mother, Sara Fina.  The vessel wall thickness, shape of the bear paws, and vessel style all are more like Margaret’s jars than her mom’s.  Sara Fina’s jars have thinner walls and more pronounced flaring rims and they are not of this shape.

The name Serafina and Santa Clara have been scratched into the clay on the undersideThe name Serafina and Santa Clara have been scratched into the clay on the underside, however, it could have been placed there by an owner and not by the maker.  To me, this jar is much more attributable to Margaret Tafoya than to Sara Fina Tafoya, however, since it is signed, we are presenting it as a signed jar with the name Serafina although we have our doubts that she made it but believe strongly that it was made by Margaret Tafoya.

Condition: very good condition with some surface scratches and minor slip crack confined to the lower 1/3rd of the jar.  Nothing of significance wrong with the jar.
