Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Maria and Julian were truly outstanding artisans and they have proven this over and over to us as masterpieces created by them three quarters of a century ago appear on the market today.  Once one thinks he is familiar with the work of this couple, something appears that is totally unlike anything by them seen before.  This is the example of this extraordinary shallow dish.

Signatures of Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980) Pond Lily and Julián Martinez (1885-1943) Pocano - Coming of the Spirits

It is an oval dish and may be one of the very few ever made by Maria and Julian.  Even more unusual than being oval is the design created by Julian for the interior of the dish.  It is an extraordinarily modern design, perhaps based on an Art Deco style.  It is simply a grouping of triangular shaped elements combined in an amazing pattern.  Julian’s design on this dish is not documented in any published books of which I am aware.  It is strikingly simple, yet amazing and mind boggling at the same time.  It certainly ranks as one of the most beautiful creations from Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980) Pond Lily and Julián Martinez (1885-1943) Pocano - Coming of the Spirits.

Condition: very good condition. No visible damage of any form.
