Virgil Ortiz, Cochiti Pueblo Artist

Virgil Ortiz (born 1969) is probably one of the most versatile of all pueblo potters. He makes traditional figurative pottery, experimental figurative pottery, traditional pottery vessels, and, now, designer clothing. When recently shown this figurine, Virgil said “It is from a story/myth about when giants were here. Used to gather kids for food!” The figurine is typical of creations from the fertile mind of Virgil Ortiz. There is no other pueblo artist of today who is as creative in figurative pottery as is he. His figurines are based on legends, myths and ideas from his own mind. Never are they unimaginable. The figurine may be of a monster-type giant but he sure is beautifully presented. He is painted with a variety of designs over his whole body, front and back. He is magnificent as are all of Ortiz’s pottery figurines. It is signed by the artist and dated 1995. Condition: original condition Provenance: from the collection of an Indiana family Recommended Reading: Clay People: Pueblo Indian Figurative Traditions by Jonathan Batkin Virgil Ortiz (born 1969) is probably one of the most versatile of all pueblo potters.
