Once Known Native American Weaver

Two Grey Hills weavings were developed to feature the natural beauty of the wool and the highly refined patterns that would showcase a weaver’s technical ability and artistry. This Two Grey Hills rug certainly exhibits all of those traits.  Natural brown wool provides the background upon which the structured pattern has been inter-woven. The central grey stepped element is woven of carded black and grey wool interspersed with a complex stepped diamond pattern executed in white wool, all of this is bordered in black.

Along the central vertical axis of the rug are a series of black cross forms. Embellishing the central motif is a white outline that creates stepped wedge patterns. Inside each stepped wedge is a soft wool of golden hue. This golden color may be vegetal dyed rabbit brush.

The four corners of the weaving are anchored by triangular elements, or mountains that are woven of over-dyed black, white and carded grey wool.  A strong border is created by a block outline in black, followed by woven white and a thick band of black wool.

Condition: there is are three very small areas of moth damage on one side of this Navajo rug.

Provenance: From a resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico
