Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Signatures of Julian and Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980) Pond Lily

Maria and Julian produced some of the best pottery of their career in the early years of their collaboration.  Those were times of experimentation and reflection and little pressure to produce.  Julian was free to experiment with design styles and was not influenced by what dealers or collectors preferred.  He was most creative then.

This is an excellent example of their collaborative work.  Maria created a beautiful vessel shape and did a magnificent job of stone polishing it.  Julian placed matte black design elements around the supper section of the jar, each element designed to fit a specific section.  His artistic talent was amazing.  The combination of the work of the two master artists is beautifully reflected in this jar.

Condition: very good condition with some surface scratches

Provenance: from the collection of a Santa Fe family
