Once Known Native American Carver

The Hopi Kuwan Heheya Katsina is known as the Colorful Heheya Katsina. As a group, they dance with Kachinmana Katsinas who dance in a separate line and kneel and rasp at certain parts of the ceremony. The purpose of such ceremonies is to bring rain for the crops. They are the line of katsinas frequently selected for the Niman Ceremony.  They participate in the Powamu ceremony in February when the bean sprouts are planted in the kiva.

This carving is of the style of the early 1900s carvings and is quite possibly one from 1910 or 1920 or so.  It is an excellent example of an early carving.

Condition: very good condition with some loss of paint.

Provenance: sold by Adobe Gallery to a client in 1985 and now for sale again from that client.
