Mark Tahbo (1958- ) signatureMark Tahbo just brought us this amazing polychrome jar decorated with Sikyatki bird designs.  Mark said he made the jar over two years ago and did not know what design he wanted to put on it so he put it away.  Finally he saw this bird on a Nampeyo jar and decided this was the design that was appropriate for the jar.

Each of the four birds on the jar is slightly different and each is slightly different from the Nampeyo one he saw.  He did not want to copy Nampeyo but used her bird as an inspiration for his own design.  Mark took the extra effort to polish the interior of the jar, a step not often taken by potters.

When Mark brought the jar to the gallery, he spent over an hour discussing it in detail. He obviously is very proud of it as he is about all his pottery. He is a most enthusiastic promotor of his own work. He works hard at making the absolutely best pottery possible and then he is proud of his accomplishments. I think it is admirable that these are not just items for sale but each one is Mark’s baby and he almost doesn’t want to part with them. He is truly talented and his finished product clearly backs that up.
