This jar is an early work by Russell Sanchez, probably 20 or so years old. The clay body of the upper half is stone polished black and the lower half is matte finish black. The clay has mica flakes which sparkle beautifully. The design is a turtle executed in sgraffito style on the front of the jar and an Avanyu on the back of the jar. The tail of the Avanyu overlays the back of the turtle and the lightning from the Avanyu’s mouth does as well. The turtle has a beautiful blue oval turquoise stone imbedded in its back in an area of sienna color. There is one small turquoise stone imbedded in the back of the jar near the base. The jar is signed Russell Sanchez S.I.P. on the underside.
