Russell Sanchez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Artist

This black bear figurine has a body that has been stone polished and an underside slip in black matte finish.  Across the back of the bear, in an area of sienna color, is a row of square-cut turquoise cabs.  The bear’s eyes are small turquoise cabs.  The figure is signed Russell under one foot.

Collectors of contemporary pueblo pottery are well familiar with the work of Russell Sanchez.  Over the past 30 years, he has consistently improved his quality of work and uniqueness of style.  He is not one to produce the same thing over and over.  Every item created by Russell is unique.

Russell is certainly the 21st-century master artist at San Ildefonso Pueblo.  His work is flawless and beautiful to view.  It will certainly stand the scrutiny of time and be classed as a true work of art for decades to come.  Now is the time to add his pottery to one’s collection while the prices are still affordable.
