Anita Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Anita Martinez was a daughter of Adam and Santana Martinez and the mother of potter Barbara Gonzales. I have found very little published information about Anita's pottery proficiency in either Susan Peterson's book or Richard Spivey's book concerning the Martinez family. I knew Anita from many trips to her house in the 1980s to purchase pottery from her—pottery by her parents Adam and Santana and pottery by Anita herself.

Anita was a very fine potter but she was somewhat overlooked because her parents and grandmother were in the main stream and later, her daughter, Barbara Gonzales received much attention because of her progressive approach of applying spiders and webs as her designs.

This sienna-on-black jar of Anita's is as beautifully polished as any other family member's work. Her treatment of the sienna top over the black lower body was very well accomplished—a feat not too easily done. The jar is in original excellent structural condition but there are a few scratches in the black polished area.
