Mark Tahbo, Hopi-Tewa Potter

Mark Tahbo (1958- ) signatureMark Tahbo is a very talented potter and it seems that he is constantly improving his techniques and his design verve. For many years, he was using pottery designs inspired by the works of Grace Chapella, his great-grandmother.  Grace was fond of using images of butterflies or moths on her pottery, to the point that it became her signature design.  Mark followed her style for many years.  Recently, however, he has become enchanted with the work of Nampeyo and the prehistoric residents of Sikyatki and has begun incorporating those into his pottery designs, although not copying anything but using them for inspiration.

This jar is rich in color and design.  Traditional red slip and a beautiful darker red slip comprise the color scheme of the jar and contrast beautifully with the dark brown paint.  The curved beaks with stippling, probably inspired by eagles, along with the checkerboard panel, are derived from Sikyatki pottery designs.  The body of the jar is just full of wonderful design elements, all of which combine to produce a stunning work.  Mark is to be congratulated for such a fine jar.
