Tony Abeyta has been showered with accolades and awards this year and deservedly so. He is a very talented young man and one not afraid to try a number of painting styles. One of my favorites of his paintings is the depiction of summer rain over the hillsides and mountains. Summer storms over the Taos Mountains and Santa Fe's Sangre de Cristo Mountains are among nature's most spectacular moments, akin to storms over the Grand Canyon. Moments like these are irresistible to artists of the Southwest. John Marin, Victor Higgins, Raymond Jonson and others have painted storms such as this. Now, Abeyta has done so and in a most spectacular manner. The rolling hills are awash in color—reds, yellows, greens and blues—and are being nurtured with strong waves of rain. The clouds are billowing and one can visualize the strength they contain. Various shades from dark blue to white convey the moisture content the clouds hold. There is a cubist or modernist approach to the painting. As usual, Abeyta has produced a powerful image of nature at work. Framing: the painting is framed in a gold-leaf handmade frame by Gold Leaf Framemakers of Santa Fe. Condition: as new
