This is a regularly decorated Zia olla with Zia birds and double rainbow designs. The design is mostly obliterated because of the extensive use of the jar. It appears that the jar could have been used in cooking or perhaps storing liquid that either leached through the surface or spilled over the surface from decades of dripping from the use of a ladle.
Whatever the reason for the immense amount of surface patina, it is a beautiful example of a traditional jar that was made for use and used extensively. We see so many ollas that were made for sale and they are pristine, so it is refreshing to see one that has a history of use.
Condition: consistent with use
