Louise Shepherd is Diné (Navajo).  Coal Mine Mesa is located on Highway 264 between Ganado and Tuba City.  It was originally on the Navajo Reservation with a Chapter House but has now been abandoned by the Navajo as it was part of the land swap between the Navajo and Hopi.  It is now part of the Hopi Reservation.  Coal Mine Mesa rugs are still being made by the Navajo weavers who were from that location but have now relocated.

Distinct to the Coal Mine Mesa rugs are the colors of the dyes and the style of weaving.  The colors are pastel in shade—soft colors of yellow, green, rose and other colors of nature.  The weaving technique is referred to as “raised outline” and is somewhat a dimensional style in which designs are raised above the level of the basic weave, a technique unique to those weavers of that location.
