From the Dust Jacket

The Dress and Adornment of the Women of New Mexico is the subject of this colorful book which deals with ever-changing yet ever-fascinating fashions through the centuries. In text and in photos, the author traces the history of Spanish dress as it evolved in sixteenth century Spain, was brought across the oceans, and became a part of the life and culture of New Spain. The author’s research led her to various sources, the most unexpected of which was the Santa Fe office of the Cadastral Engineer, an office which deals with New Mexico lands. Why there? She discovered that many eighteenth and nineteenth century dresses were conveyed to heirs just as land and property were bequeathed. Wills recorded in this office describe dresses as well as items of adornment and jewelry.

In addition to a brief history of dress, there are detailed explanations of the origins and development of El Mantón de Manila, La Mantilla, El Tápalo, La Peineta, and their introduction into New Mexico. Many are illustrated in full color.

Ten of the Wills are itemized with translations in English (1739-1831). Wedding dresses and other costumes of the 1880’s [sic] are illustrated.

Carl Hertzog has provided both an introduction and the design for this book, one sure to please those interested in our Spanish heritage as it is reflected in feminine fashions from an elegant, gracious period that is now past, but still remembered with nostalgia.
