Alice Marriott, a trained ethnologist who writes with the skill of a novelist, herself lives in the vicinity of Santa Fe and not far from San Ildefonso, where she talked almost daily for many months with Maria in gathering material for this account.  She has served as a specialist in the Division of Indian Arts and Crafts for the Department of the Interior, as a field research fellow for the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe and for the Department of Anthropology in the University of Oklahoma.  During World War II she was a general field representative for the American Red Cross in West Texas and New Mexico.
