Grab began visiting Santa Fe as a young man. After finishing his studies in painting and drawing at Art Center in Pasadena, California, he moved to Santa Fe and made it his home in 1981. His fascination with New Mexico landscape is expressed in paintings that have a raw honest quality.

“What I like to do” he says, “is to paint on location, you get an emotional experience you can’t get in the studio. You let the landscape dictate what you put down and have no preconceived notions.”

La Cieneguilla Petroglyph Site is located just Southwest of Santa Fe about 3 miles. There are hundreds of petroglyph that date from pre-contact time along this escarpment. El Camino Real, the ancient road from Mexico City to Santa Fe, passed along here as well. The site is now under the auspices of the Bureau of Land Management.

Grab has represented the escarpment in most realistic fashion as only one can doen plein air. The solid rock core protruding from the top of the escarpment is highlighted by the blue sky and softened by the more pastel colors of the dirt and greenery on the downward slope. The adobe house at the base fades into the landscape as adobe structures often do.

This is an exceptional painting and is in original excellent condition. It is signed in lower left, but not dated.
