Gregorita Trujillo (1932- )

Rarely do the conservative New Mexico potters paint katsinas on pottery. Hopi potters have done so for decades, but one does not see such from the Rio Grande pueblos. Gregorita Trujillo is apparently an exception.

This jar features two katsinas on opposing sides and corn plants separating them, over which are rain clouds. The painted designs were executed in matte slips, as was the tan background. The rim and underbody were slipped in red and stone polished.

This jar most likely dates to circa 1980. It is in excellent condition. The artist’s name is etched into the underside.
