Stella Huma was one of the finest potters on the Hopi Reservation—especially in forming the vessel shape when making her pottery. She was a master at crafting thin-walled vessels (much as the Acoma Pueblo potters) and achieving an exquisite burnish to the finished product. Her designs, as in this piece, were painted with the utmost care and precision.
This jar has a beautiful stylized eagle that commands the full space from base to rim on opposite sides of the jar. Each eagle is presented in black paint with stippling on beak and feathers and only the slightest red used in one feather. The simplicity of the design is its appeal. No other elements conceal the beautiful burnishing on the jar.
This vessel is signed by the artist and marked “Aug74” in pencil. This may mean the creation date or the acquisition date—we cannot be sure. Nonetheless, it is now part of the history of this exquisite jar.
Condition Report: There is a hairline crack starting at the rim and going down about 1-1/2 inches.
