Crucita Gonzales Calabaza - Blue Corn, San Ildefonso Pueblo Pottery Matriarch

Special Offer: The owner has authorized a price reduction of 30% from the original price of $750 to a new price of $525.

Blue Corn is responsible for reviving Polychrome pottery at San Ildefonso Pueblo. After the Black-on-black was made famous by Maria and Julian Martinez, the Polychrome wares faded into history. Blue Corn produced blackware and redware but her specialty was her beautiful Polychrome pottery

This dish was covered in a white slip made from clay native to San Ildefonso. It was then stone polished to a beautiful sheen before the designs were applied using mineral and vegetal paints. A very stylized head of the Avanyu appears near the rim between a bank of clouds to its right and rain symbols to its left. Also, near the rim, is a stylized bird design. The center of the dish is covered in a dynamic cross hatch design that is outlined in red clouds which are then outlined in black.

The bowl is signed Blue Corn San Ildefonso Pueblo. It is in very good condition. It dates from the early 1970s.
