Santana Melchor was considered one of the finest potters at Santo Domingo in the early- and mid-20^th century. She made exceptional large storage jars. Throughout her career, she used traditional designs and is responsible for keeping that tradition alive. She was part of the delegation of pueblo potters who visited the White House in 1974 as a guest of first lady Pat Nixon.

In this jar, Santana placed two very large birds that apparently are turkeys as evidenced by the turkey tracks across the bottom of the design area, and she placed two floral elements between the turkeys. The jar is signed Santana Melchor Santo Domingo. It is in original mint condition.
