The Zuni are master stone workers in the manner of setting stones within silver channels. This piece is typical of that style.
Three-dimensional stone carving at Zuni was originally limited to making fetishes of small animals. A few of the more prominent stonecutters began developing the style to include wearable jewelry such as bracelets, pins, and rings. This occurred as early as the 1920s.
This style of stonework is referred to a channel inlay—a method of setting the stones within silver channels. The stonework was inlayed over a piece of silver backing, and that was, in turn, set on the silver piece that forms the feathered wings. The whole item is curved so that it does not lay flat. It is fitted with a secure pin as well as a hook for attaching a chain. It can be worn as a pin or a pendant.
