Juana Leno (1917-2000) Syo-ee-mee (Turquoise) - Artist Image, Source UnknownCovering a wide area of the American Southwest, there are 19 pueblos in New Mexico and the Hopi villages in Arizona. Each pueblo has its own distinctive style of pottery, with identifiable design elements and clay qualities. The characteristics of the clay are determined by the local deposits of the raw clay materials available to the potters. In addition, depending on the nature of the local clays, potters from individual pueblos add a variety of different materials for temper. Temper is added to the clay paste to aid in the even drying of the clay, adding strength to the finished vessel. For generations, potters at Acoma pueblo have used ground up pieces of ancient pottery shards for temper. It is intriguing to imagine that one pot could have parts of multiple older pots within its walls.

Acoma pottery is known for its delicate thin walled structure and eye-catching fine line designs. This pot made by potter Juana Leno exhibits all of the characteristics of an extremely well-made Acoma vessel. The walls of this hand coiled olla are egg shell thin. The fine line geometric designs have been executed with precision and utmost care. The top of the jar has a unique, flat corrugated rim that folds inward, an almost impossible task for a potter to accomplish. The pot is signed on the bottom by the artist.

Juana Leno (1971-2000) signatureJuana Leno worked every day producing extraordinary pottery without seeking acclaim. She was a wonderful woman and very modest about her talent to produce such fine pieces. She may not have achieved the fame she was due, but it was not because of the lack of quality in her work, but because she chose to remain quietly at home and not seek fame.
