This Acoma Pueblo pottery seed jar is one of the few seed jars Adobe Gallery has had that was made by Marie Z. Chino.  Mostly we have had water jar or OLLA shaped vessels from her. This one has a high shoulder, providing room for significant design application and Chino took advantage of the space to explore her talent.  She applied a design in polychrome on opposing sides and a design mostly in black and white on the other opposing sides.

Artist Signature - Marie Zieu Chino, Acoma Pueblo PotterThe polychrome design features, as the prime element, the traditional Acoma Pueblo parrot.  She presents the parrot in orange without any outlining. The parrot has an elaborate crown of feathers flowing from its head and a three-fan of tail feathers.  Separating the polychrome band of design and the black and white one is an undulating rainbow that flows under the parrot and over the black and white design. Inside the wide rainbow are rectangular bars in orange outlined in black.  The black and white design is, itself, an image of a bird with elaborate tail feathers and black wings. This bird’s body consists of sections of parallel black fine lines.

Condition: this Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Pottery Seed Jar by Marie Z. Chino is in very good condition:

Provenance: from a client in Illinois who purchased it from the Case Trading Post of the Wheelwright Museum, Santa Fe, on January 24, 1980.
