Juanita Wo-peen Gonzales (1909-1988) was originally from Taos Pueblo. She met Louis “Wo-Peen” Gonzales of San Ildefonso Pueblo and married him in 1933. She moved to San Ildefonso at that time. She learned pottery making from Rose Gonzales, thus it is expected that a large part of her production would be carved blackware, as is this jar.
The artist carved designs reflecting clouds on the upper half of the jar. The three rounded clouds easily appear as clouds, however, the stepped ones and the pointed ones also represent clouds. The lower half of the jar is polished black. The jar is signed Juanita Wo-Peen on the underside.
Condition: very good condition with minor scratches
Provenance: from a Santa Fe collector
