Most often, Cochiti Pueblo drum makers either leave the drum heads unpainted or they paint the edges black and sometimes add a white bull’s eye in the center of the head.  The artisan of this hand-held drum painted both heads with shield images, using slightly different colors and designs on each.

The pueblo drum appears to be an older one that has been painted again as evidenced by the orange paint that covers the leather anchors for the two heads.  Another clue to the age is the split on both heads that has been hand stitched with sinew.

Condition: this Hand Held Cochiti Painted Drum is in very good condition with repairs as indicated
