Unique and telented Acoma Pueblo artist Delores Juanico creates miniature pottery and applies designs from published historic pottery. This jar has a design she chose from a published Acoma jar from circa 1870s. She acknowledges this by putting the date of the original jar on the bottom of her jar. The design on this jar is from the book The Pottery of Acoma Pueblo by Harlow and Lanmon.
Delores Juanico (1969 - ) is a daughter of Marie S. Juanico (1937 - ) who was her mentor. Marie learned pottery principals from her mother, Delores Sanchez, who lived to the age of 103. Young Delores carries on the tradition from her grandmother and mother of making the finest Acoma pottery. Her construction is traditional to Acoma pottery and the vessel walls are amazingly thin and consistent throughout. The design was painted to absolute perfection. Each line is thin and precise, and the application of the fill-in paint is consistent in texture.
It would be difficult to fully describe just how talented Delores is as a potter and painter of pottery. She certainly is among the top tier of today's Acoma Pueblo potters.
