As Native American jewelry became more well recognized and the markets for selling the jewelry expanded, craftsmen began to approach their designs and forms with a broader outlook. In the early 1950s, inspired by the Art Deco movement and Danish Modernism of the early 20th Century, artists at the White Hogan Studio in Scottsdale and the Thunderbird Studio in Santa Fe and Tucson began to create work that was distinctly different from what had previously been made. Other artists followed suit and began to craft their work in a more modern style.

This single stone ring is made in the style of the Modernist Movement. It features an oval blue-green stone set in a smooth bezel which is placed in a polished shadowbox frame.  The face of the ring rests on a smooth solid shank. The ring is well made, but unfortunately is unsigned, so we don’t know specifically who the Diné artist was.

Condition: The Modernist Oval Ring with Single Stone is in very good condition.

Provenance: From a Colorado Southwest Indian Jewelry collection

Note: when we say Diné, as opposed to Navaho or Navajo, we are referring to the people and not the government.  Since 1969, their government refers to itself as the Navajo Nation.
