Navajo painter Wade Hadley was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School from 1936 to 1937. This painting bears the influence of his Indian School education while adding dimension and depth, creating a whimsical image of deer, eagles and rainbows.
This painting, entitled “Rainbow Country”, is dated 1940. Hadley was drafted before the Pearl Harbor tragedy, and was in the Pacific Theater for the majority of World War II. He was known for creating sketches depicting the absurdity of life during wartime. Perhaps painting serene and beautiful scenes was another way that Hadley found solace while on leave from active duty.
