Artist Signature - J.D. Roybal (1922-1978) OquwaJosé Disiderio (J.D.) Roybal [1922-1978] Oquwa - Rain God was a talented and accomplished painter from San Ildefonso Pueblo.  He is best known for his colorful and detailed depictions of San Ildefonso ceremonial rituals. He was a prolific artist, producing many small, single-figure pieces for sale.  The majority of these works—in keeping with the “flat” style favored by Pueblo painters of the time—contain no background or ground plane.

These two single-figure paintings stand out from the many similarly themed and similarly composed works by Roybal.  The most obvious and most notable difference is their size—each measures over a foot in height and about nine inches in width.  They are, in every way, “scaled up” from the notecard-sized single-figure works that Roybal produced prolifically. Their larger sizes allowed Roybal to include even more of the incredible detail for which he is well known.

Artist Signature - J.D. Roybal (1922-1978) OquwaRoybal’s Koosa Clown—one of the artist’s favorite subjects—is incredibly well-crafted, depicted in great detail on gray paper.  His Buffalo Dancer, pictured in stride and carrying a bow, is also more detailed than those that are pictured in his smaller works.  Both paintings are particularly strong in color, too. Considering their excellent quality, it is interesting that Roybal did not create many works in this size.  Perhaps he experimented with different sizes of single figure images and found the smaller size to be easier and more profitable to create. Whatever the case may be, it is fortunate for collectors that rare and unusual experiments like these exist.
