J.D. Roybal, San Ildefonso Pueblo Painter

Black and white pen and ink drawings by San Ildefonso Pueblo artist J. D. Roybal are not the norm for this artist.  Generally, his drawings and paintings are very colorful.  Also, his subject matter has concentrated on Koosa Clowns and Harvest Dance scenes, however, this drawing is of a Matachine Dancer, a subject I have not seen from him in the past.

The line drawings are very precise as are all Roybal’s paintings.  He lightly drew the image in pencil and then executed it in ink.  The result is an exceptional drawing.

Condition: appears to be in original condition

Provenance: from a gentleman from Tesuque, New Mexico, passed down from his father who was an acquaintance of the artist
