Paul Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

Paul Naranjo (1957-2002) artist signatureAward winning artist Paul Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo is known for his brownware pottery with sgraffito designs.  It seems that there are some misunderstandings about Paul’s birth and death dates. Some websites show those to be 1960-1993, 1950-1993, and 1957-2002.  The latter dates were obtained from an online obituary and are the dates we have selected to use. Names of relations mentioned in the obituary were confirmed with a Santa Clara native as being related to Paul, so we are confident that he passed away in 2002 as indicated.

Paul received awards at Santa Fe Indian Market every year from 1988 to 1992, including a Best of Division award.

This brownware small wedding vessel is one of his signature styles.  The body of the vessel is decorated with a deer and doe on one side and an Avanyu water serpent on the opposite side. The Avanyu wraps around the vessel body, intersecting with the deer design. The spouts and arch were rendered in a polished brown finish.

The wedding vase is signed with the name of the potter and pueblo, but not dated.

Unlike pieces created and inspired by tourism, the shape of the wedding vase has historical significance. The two spouts represent the bride and groom and the base where the two come together represents the shared life of the couple.
