Geraldine Naranjo (1952- ) Geri

Geraldine Naranjo (1952- ) signatureGeri Naranjo is an extraordinary potter and works exclusively in miniature scale. She, along with her daughter Monica and her son Kevin are the primary makers of miniature pottery at Santa Clara Pueblo.  She mostly produces black pottery but occasionally makes red wares. This jar was made in 1983 and is signed Geri Naranjo Santa Clara.

This small jar is one of her rarer redware pieces.  A carved Avanyu encircles the upper body of the jar in the sgraffito style.  Above and below the Avanyu the jar is polished red slip. It is important for one to understand that the design is created by slowly removing the clay around the desired design through a meticulous pecking away with a sharp tool.  A single mistake would ruin the design.
