Alton Komalestewa (b.1959 - ), a Hopi-Tewa, was married to the daughter of Helen Shupla of Santa Clara Pueblo and Kenneth Shupla, a Hopi Pueblo carver. He lived with the Shupla family at Santa Clara and learned pottery-making from Helen—thus the resemblance in style to her work. Following the deaths of all the Shuplas, Alton returned to the Hopi Reservation. Alton is a great grandson of Nampeyo of Hano through her son William Komalestewa (1893-1922).
This strikingly beautiful highly-burnished jar stands proudly revealing its perfect vessel shape and its rich red finish. Alton learned the techniques of making Santa Clara pottery very well. The shape of his vessels are very pleasing to the eye.
Alton stone polished this jar in a horizontal pattern, then polished with a vertical stroke, resulting in polishing lines that crisscross into a textured pattern.
Condition: this Santa Clara Tall Polished Red Jar is in excellent original condition
Provenance: from a gentleman from New Mexico
