Serigraph Image of Family of Three Deer [SOLD]

Woody Crumbo was born near Lexington, Oklahoma in 1912. He attended Wichita University and the University of Oklahoma. While he was a student, he supported himself by dancing with tribes across the country.   As an artist, he was a prolific painter and printmaker. His work can be found in the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City, New York). There is a large collection of his work at the Gilcrease Museum (Tulsa, Oklahoma), where he was responsible for curating a collection of Native American art. During his life, it was important to him to bring Native American art to a non-Native audience.  He was best known for his whimsical animal images and portrayal of colorful Native American dancers.

Crumbo’s  images of animals have mystical quality.  In this silkscreen print of a deer family he rendered the subjects in shades of blue, giving them an otherworldly quality.  He placed the family in a desert landscape populated with beautifully colored yucca plants. Known to have used up to sixteen separate screens for one image, Crumbo used color creatively to make the deer family seem as if each was looking straight at the viewer.  The piece has Crumbo’s signature screened in on the bottom right.

Condition: The Serigraph Image of Family of Three Deer is in good condition. There are slight markings in the upper right hand corner.  It is matted and shrink wrapped but not framed.
