Woody Crumbo spent his life making art and promoting the art and culture of Native Americans. His work is found in the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.)  and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City). He served as a director at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the El Paso Art Museum where he worked to make Native American art more visible to a non-Native audience.  Known for his depictions of Native American dancers, as well as animal scenes, Crumbo worked in various media, including oils, but is mostly known for silkscreen prints and etchings. Sometimes working with up to sixteen different screens, he produced multiple copies of the same image, with the intention of making his work more accessible to the general public.

Woodrow Wilson Crumbo (1912-1989) signatureThis silkscreen print is a night scene of two deer—a mother deer with her fawn. Crumbo set them against a wintery background, with snow covering the distant hills. The pair is gazing up into a clear star-filled sky. Crumbo rendered the deer in shades of blue, giving them a mystical appearance. He was a master of the silkscreen process, using thin lines of color to give the piece a three-dimensional feel. The artist’s name is silkscreened into the image on the bottom right.
