Dewayne Mathews (1953- ) Fishinghawk is a Cherokee painter who, like many Native artists, uses his creative process to celebrate and remain close to his culture.

Mathews created this portrait of a Cherokee Indian using colorful acrylic paints.  A simple black outline of the subject’s face and shoulders is augmented by thick streaks of bright colors.  Bright orange, yellow, purple, and turquoise are each used sparingly to accentuate the outline, and are then combined to create a shaded chin area and a dark tuft of hair.

The bright red background is signed with the artist’s name and “Fishinghawk”.
