The artists of Zuni Pueblo are known for their lapidary ability to cut and shape stones. They have been creating beautiful works of adornment for centuries using turquoise, shell, coral and jet. In the late 19th Century they began using silver to accentuate the beauty of cut stones. The Zuni needlepoint style got its name from the fine embroidery work that was popular at the beginning of the 20th century. Just as some women would spend hours sewing colorful designs with tiny stitches of thread, the Zuni used small stones to create designs to wear as jewelry.

Very small, thin turquoise stones were shaped and set in handmade bezels to create this cross necklace. Each small piece of turquoise is separated by even smaller sterling silver drops. Thin silver wire loops form a flower-like background for the cross. The necklace hangs on a delicate sterling silver chain.

Condition:  The Zuni Pueblo Needlepoint Cross Necklac is ein good condition. The chain is in good shape. There is a very nice patina to the silver.

Provenance: From a Santa Fe collection
