The Land of the Pueblos

By Susan E. Wallace

John B. Alden, Publisher, New York

Hardback, first edition 1888

Susan Arnold Elston was born December 25, 1830, and married Lew Wallace on May 6, 1852.  Lew was appointed to serve as Governor of the New Mexico Territory by President Hayes in 1878.  Former Civil War Gen. Lew Wallace arrived in Santa Fe on September 29, 1878.  He moved into the historic Palace of the Governors.

A year later, he brought out his new wife, Susan.  While governor, Lew Wallace finished his manuscript for the book Ben Hur.  Susan, an accomplished writer, wrote The Land of the Pueblos at the same time.

The Palace of the Governors was a disaster.  The floors were packed dirt, the walls were mud-plastered and had been papered over, the roof leaked, and it was uncomfortably cold.  The Wallaces made the most of the situation while they worked on their manuscripts.

Condition: The book is in good condition; however, it is fragile, evidence of its 130-year existence.  It is a collectible item to be preserved, and to be read carefully.
