The Exhibition

“This is a celebration of the artforms and talents of the Indians of the Southwest.  Whether the works were done a thousand years ago or yesterday, whether made for trade, adornment or just everyday use is not only interesting but important historically, geographically and culturally.  It is an ethnic art.  In selecting material for this exhibition, however, since we are an art museum, we have taken the liberty of stressing the aesthetic point of view.  We feel that the unique quality and marvelous imagination of these works prove once again that true art is universal.”

There were 535 items in the exhibition but only a select number are illustrated in this catalog, some in color and some in black and white.  A listing of all 535 items is included in this catalog as well as a listing of those who loaned items to the exhibition.
