This collectible pottery male figurine with drum in his lap by Gloria Arquero of Cochiti Pueblo represents either a drum maker or a drummer. Either way, this represents a very powerful, important person—especially in the dance processions. He is the one that keeps everyone in step.
He is dressed in a fancy vest, wears a necklace and headband and a black belt. He was made as a pair with a seated female storyteller figurine, our item #C4004B. Each is priced separately and available for purchase separately, but they do make a nice couple. Each of the figurines is signed Gloria Arquero, an indication that they were made a number of years ago, before her marriage.
Potter Gloria Arquero Herrera (ca.1940-) is a sister of Marie Laweka, Martha Arquero and Josephine Arquero. Their mother was Damacia Cordero of Cochiti Pueblo. Her figurines are very similar in style to those of her siblings.
Condition: this Cochiti Pueblo Pottery Seated Drummer Figurine by Gloria Arquero Herrera is in very good condition
Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman from Santa Fe
