Gustav Stickley (1858-1942)
  • Category: Mission Oak Furniture
  • Origin: Craftsman Workshops
  • Medium: Quarter-sawn Oak
  • Size: 40” high x 14” wide x 10” deep
  • Item # 24132
  • Price: $2,895.00

Described in Gustav Stickley’s 1904 Craftsman Catalog, as “A convenient rack for favorite books and periodicals.” The catalog-listed price in 1904 was $8.50.

This piece falls into Stickley’s mature phase. With little more than a few pieces of plain oak boards, he created a functional yet elegant piece of furniture. The sides rise vertically, creating a clean design and making the shelves conveniently able to hold books or magazines. The plain sides are punctuated by modest exposed tenons and half-circle cutouts, which make the piece easy to lift. An arched stretcher under the bottom shelf adds elegance to an otherwise simple structure. Here is decoration formed by structural and functional necessity as Stickley believed.

This piece functions well as a repository for pueblo pottery. The spacing between the shelves is 8-1/2 inches.
