The Navajo wedding basket involves a plain center, a design area consisting of a repeated series of an inner stepped black pattern which joins a plain red band, the latter, in turn, supports a second row of more numerous repeated black steps, and then there is a plain area to the rim.

One very simple interpretation is that the inner black steps represent the under world, the red band is the earth and life, and the outer black steps stand for the upper world. The center spot in the basket represents the beginning of this earth as the Navajo emerged from the cave.

This basket is probably 50 or more years old.

Condition: this Traditional Diné - Navajo Ceremonial Wedding Basket is in good condition with minor fading to front.

Provenance: from a Santa Fe collector who has since passed away
