Once Known Native American Carver

This White Ogre Hopi Pueblo katsina doll carries a basket on its back for the purpose of threatening the children to be hauled away if they do not learn to do their chores in a Hopi manner.  He is displayed as a muscular person to strengthen his authority.  He is probably a mid-twentieth century carving.

There is a crack running down his right side from his arm to his knee, however it is solid and does not appear to be of any danger.  It appears that his left foot has been repaired prior to the doll being mounted on the pedestal.

This Awatovi’sooyoko Katsina, White Ogre Kachina Doll from the Fred Harvey Collection is mounted on a square black wood platform of the style used by the Fred Harvey Company on many of its katsina dolls.  There are no other identifying markings to indicate a Fred Harvey provenance, however the doll is part of the collection with that provenance.
