John Adair, author of an early and authoritative book on Native jewelry, The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths, observed in the 1930s that small squash blossoms were being made as attachments to earrings.  Squash blossoms are known as adornments on necklaces early in the 20th century so it is not unexpected that they would be used on earrings as well.

The squash blossoms in this pair are short as those were on early necklaces. Later the blossoms became longer, perhaps to be more impressive.  Although these earrings feature the shorter blossoms, it is likely they were made in the late 20th century, mimicking the earlier style.
